FEDERAL RESEARCH MINISTER VISITS OES
High visit to Hannover – Organic electronic attracts two federal ministries
“At the time, 15 years ago, we demonstrated with the aid of a potato battery that an OLED can be operated with low voltage. Today, we have a 500 metre production line running, producing organic solar foil.” With these words Dr. Martin Pfeiffer welcomed Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka, Federal Research Minister, at the stand of Organic Electronics Saxony.
The Minister is impressed by the innovative progress in Dresden and the abundance of competence in Saxony. As a stimulus to building integration, the Minister takes a solar cell with her to the ministry.
Organic Electronics Saxony (OES) was selected as one of two clusters with a particular innovative power within the framework of the first cluster week in Germany. This shows that the clusters’ path towards innovation at the international level is the right one. “We have succeeded in integrating organic semiconductors into various innovative products and working with partners outside Europe, who are also leaders in this field,” explains Dr. Dominik Gronarz, CEO of the OES innovation group. “We are very pleased about the attention of the Federal Minister, as she already has been introduced to the subject by our cooperation partners in Japan.” Of course, the cluster work does not serve the self-purpose, but primarily benefits the members. A jointly developed strategy on the road to success will help many companies to achieve their goals.
Martin Pfeiffer, co-founder of Heliatek GmbH and always open to innovation, says: “Thanks to our many years of support, we have succeeded in bringing organic solar cells to market maturity so that we are now on the threshold of mass production. We are proud that, contrary to the trend, we have set up our production plant in Germany. Of course, research must continue to be invested in order to remain competitive. As Heliatek, we are world market leaders and we want to continue and expand this position. ”
Already at the start of the Cluster Week, OES received the utmost attention from Ms Cornelia Quennet-Thielen, Secretary of State and Head of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and Mr Dirk Wiese, Parliamentary Secretary for Economic and Energy Affairs.
Mr. Wiese was impressed by the diverse possibilities of flexible displays. The displays of the company Plastic Logic are already in use in energy-saving display elements and as an ornamental element in jewelry .
Ms Quennet-Thielen was interested in the development of organic solar cells from Heliatek.
At the Hannover fair, OES presents a section of the spectrum of organic, flexible and printed electronics. In addition to flexible displays (Plastic Logic) and transparent organic solar cells (Heliatek), printed OLEDs for packaging (INURU) and flexible batteries (Fraunhofer ENAS) can also be seen.
